About Gill Matthews

Gill Matthews is a freelance literacy consultant and writer. She is also a Regional Adviser for Literacy with the Primary National Strategy in the West Midlands.

She provides schools with tailor-made support to improve literacy. She also delivers INSET on many aspects of literacy both nationally and internationally. Gill has edited numerous literacy programmes for KS1 and KS2, including the acclaimed Literacy World, Writers’ World and Rigby Dimensions, the cross-curricular literacy programme. Before becoming a freelance literacy consultant, Gill was an NLS Consultant in Gloucestershire and Portsmouth.

She was involved in the initial development of the National Literacy Strategy, and particularly with the non-fiction element of the NLS Framework for Teachers.

While working in Gloucestershire, she organised the Primary English Conferences for several years. As the prestige of the conference grew, she was able to attract speakers including Michael Morpurgo, Sue Palmer, Pie Corbett, Ian Whybrow, Viv French and Tony Mitton.
