Spotlight on ... children's authors for Key Stage 2

This INSET considers how the study of established children’s authors can be developed into an effective teaching unit that includes reading, writing, speaking and listening.

The session:

  • focuses on a selection of books by a select number of appropriate authors, e.g. Janet and Allan Ahlberg, Malorie Blackman, Anthony Browne, Dick King Smith, Philip Ridley
  • explores their backgrounds and lives
  • establishes effective ways of comparing and contrasting texts by an author
  • develops banks of reading and writing activities around particular texts
  • This course can be tailored to Y2, Y3/4 or Y5/6, focusing on authors particularly suitable for these year groups.
