Help! I've got to do guided reading!

The prospect of leading a guided reading session can be daunting for teaching assistants, especially when they’re not certain about its purpose.

This INSET aims to support Key Stage 2 teaching assistants with planning and delivering guided reading sessions and to help them develop an understanding of children’s different responses to texts.

The session:

  • explores what guided reading is
  • discusses how to structure a lesson
  • explains literal, deductive and inferential comprehension
  • gives advice on planning a guided reading session
  • makes use of videoed guided reading sessions
  • offers teaching assistants the opportunity to plan and deliver a guided reading session
