Improving progression in non-fiction writing in Years 3 to 6

Children’s progression in non-fiction writing at Key Stage 2 remains a concern – especially when compared to their progression in other areas of literacy.

This course was developed following a particularly frustrating work sampling in a school where Gill discovered that when children were writing instructions in Y2, 3, 4 and 5, they all wrote about how to make a sandwich. The only difference in the writing was the sandwich filling!

Discover how to avoid the sandwich syndrome with this INSET. It explores teaching strategies and methods that will result in children having more control over their non-fiction writing.

The session:

  • identifies and analyses non-fiction text types
  • explores how to build in progression when teaching the text types
  • investigates strategies to improve children’s non-fiction writing
  • discusses linking non-fiction knowledge to other curricula areas
