Developing a literacy-based thematic curriculum

The publication of Excellence and Enjoyment in Schools brought cross-curricular teaching and learning into the spotlight.

As the cross-curricular approach becomes more widely used in the classroom, this INSET explores the concept of delivering Key Stage 2 literacy learning and teaching through a thematic approach.

The session:

  • explores the concept of taking a theme that appeals to children and developing a half term unit of literacy work based upon that theme
  • takes into account current thinking affecting teaching
  • considers the place of multiple intelligences in teaching writing
  • discusses effective speaking and listening activities
  • addresses fiction, poetry and non-fiction writing and its coverage in a thematic curriculum
  • offers the chance to see plans from schools operating a thematic curriculum
  • gives teachers the opportunity to start to develop their own themed units
