Developing a literacy-based thematic curriculum

As the cross-curricular approach becomes more widely used in the classroom, this INSET explores the concept of delivering Key Stage 2 literacy learning and teaching through a thematic approach.
The session:
- explores the concept of taking a theme that appeals to children and developing a half term unit of literacy work based upon that theme
- takes into account current thinking affecting teaching
- considers the place of multiple intelligences in teaching writing
- discusses effective speaking and listening activities
- addresses fiction, poetry and non-fiction writing and its coverage in a thematic curriculum
- offers the chance to see plans from schools operating a thematic curriculum
- gives teachers the opportunity to start to develop their own themed units
