Using visual literacy to develop children’s writing in KS1 and KS2

The use of multimedia texts, films and picture books has been shown to enhance and develop children’s (particularly boys’) writing. Visual literacy is an integral part of the renewed Primary Framework for literacy. Are you making the most of it in your classroom?

The course will give practical guidance on using visual texts in the classroom. It will:

  • investigate techniques that can be used to teach visual literacy
  • explore the use of film in teaching cineliteracy: how to ‘read; film, where to find resources and how to use them effectively
  • offer suggestions for building units of work around visual texts
  • give participants the opportunity to explore resources and to develop units of work

Participants can expect to leave enthused, more confident and better equipped to lead others, or to plan and teach their own lessons in the future.
