The effective use of picture books in Key Stage 2

Picture books are sometimes viewed as Key Stage 1 resources, which are less successful as a teaching tool at Key Stage 2. This INSET explores the potential of picture books at Key Stage 2 in developing children’s literacy skills, particularly in relation to speaking and listening and improving writing standards.

The session:

  • explores a range of picture books
  • considers the place and function of visual literacy
  • investigates ways of responding to texts, incorporating multiple intelligences and speaking and listening activities
  • discusses potential written outcomes
  • develops planned units of work based on identified picture books
